Tortoreto Alto: a dream view in a historic seaside village

Beyond the modern seafront, the beating heart of Tortoreto is its medieval village, Tortoreto Alto, a true architectural jewel that retains its ancient charm.

After a day at the beach, move from Tortoreto Lido and climb to the top of the village to arrive at the belvedere in the historic centre. Reaching it is an experience not to be missed. Whether by bus, car, bicycle or on foot, treat yourself to a moment of relaxation and contemplation in this magical place.

Once on the terraces, a cool breeze will pamper you and your eyes will open wide in front of the breathtaking panorama that sweeps from the Adriatic coast of Abruzzo to the Conero, offering the magic of golden beaches and crystal-clear sea that merge with the horizon, touching the verdant plains of Abruzzo as far as the Gran Sasso.

A near-perfect combination of sea and history, which is completed by a visit to the historic centre. Among the narrow streets of the village, you can admire the ancient walls, on which the beautiful Clock Tower stands out, the crenellated peaks, the main gate and the stone houses, which seem to tell stories of knights and ladies.

Right in the historic centre, you can visit the Church of Our Lady of Mercy, a small jewel among Italy’s National Monuments. It was built in 1347 as a thanks to the Virgin of Mercy for the end of the plague that affected Italy in those years. Here, the geometric elements and their composition create a harmonious architecture that recounts the Renaissance era. Inside, the church preserves frescoes depicting various religious scenes, including the cycle on the theme of the Redemption of Mankind.

Continuing your tour, choose to enrich your experience by discovering more of the local artistic heritage and also visiting the Church of Saint Nicholas (13th century), the Church of the Madonna del Carmine, characterised by its ceiling painted with black and white floral decorations and recognisable by its façade and bell gable tower, and the Baroque Church of St Augustine (17th century).
