A historical monument overlooking the centre of Colonnella, the Clock Tower is immersed in the evocative setting of the medieval village, near the Church of Saints Cipriano and Giustina.
A symbol of identity and social cohesion for the community and an icon of art and historicity for any visitor who comes to admire it, the Tower exudes and passes on local history and traditions. An imposing structure of linear elegance, after a major restoration in 1964, it has retained its ancient architectural charm.
Built of brick, its origins remain shrouded in mystery, although it is assumed that its construction dates back to medieval times and was part of the city’s defence system. Quadrangular in shape, an opening at the top houses the clock mechanism, which changed from a weighted system to an electric one during the 19th century after several modernisations.
Visiting it, you will discover that a significant chapter of its past is linked to the bells: in 1868, in fact, in order to overcome the problem of a weak sound, the two original bells were merged into a single larger bell, capable of spreading the sound throughout the surrounding area. The quarter-hour bell, on the other hand, comes from the Church of San Leopardo, demolished in 1867.
In addition to its historical value, the Clock Tower offers a breathtaking panorama. From its top, you can admire a spectacular view of the town of Colonnella, the surrounding valley and the Abruzzo hinterland and, if you happen to be in the area on a particularly clear day, you will be lucky enough to expand your horizon as far as the peaks of the Gran Sasso and Maiella mountains and the landscapes of the nearby Marche region. A true natural balcony that will give you unique emotions.
