Are you ready to discover the ‘green way’ of the Adriatic? We are proposing a long stretch of it: 46 km of pure beauty to be covered by bike in about three hours, on a track winding through the province of Teramo, between golden beaches and turquoise seabeds.

Stage 1
Silvi Marina

Get on your bike and set off from Silvi Marina: coming from Pescara, it is the first of the ‘seven sisters’ of the Teramo coast, which resemble each other for the landscape and low, sandy coastline. It was here that Saila, one of Italy’s largest companies for the processing of liquorice, was founded in 1937… don’t be surprised if you smell its intense perfume in the air.

During your ride, stop for a moment and turn your gaze towards the village of Silvi Alta: the mighty arched wall, on which the Belvedere rests, stands out offering an extraordinary panorama of the Gran Sasso and the coast.

Stage 2
Pineto

Pineto is 7 km away, but first you encounter the Torre del Cerrano Marine Protected Area, an Eden for the preservation, repopulation and study of the marine ecosystem, with a fortress in the dunes dating back to 1568, once a bulwark against the Saracens. Today it houses the Library and the Sea Museum.

In Pineto the water, just a few metres from you, is clearer and the air is thinner thanks to the charming pine forest from which the town takes its name: with its shade and its plants, it creates a very favourable microclimate during the summer season, rich in oxygen and sea air, particularly suitable for outdoor activities.

Stage 3
Roseto degli Abruzzi

A 10 km sprint cycling between free beach and cultivated fields and you reach Roseto degli Abruzzi, over one hundred years of maritime tradition, with a delightful sandy shore, another pine forest and an appreciated marina.

Nearby is the Borsacchio Nature Reserve, an expanse of about 3 kilometres with dunes and stretches of Mediterranean scrub, the habitat of a rare bird, the Fratino, a tiny white wader that nests on the beach.

Stage 4
Giulianova

Back on the seafront, along the railway, crossing a wooden bridge over the Tordino river, in less than 5 km you head to Giulianova, where the cycle path also passes through the Port, surrounded by beaches, whose origin dates back to Roman times, when Castrum Novum, the city’s ancient settlement, still existed.

The south pier or ‘old’ port retains all the charm of the culture of the sea: during your ride, if you happen to be there, stop and chat with one of the picturesque ‘characters’ of the seafaring world that you meet among the caliscendi, wooden structures overlooking the water, used for small-scale fishing and today become a meeting place.

Stage 5
Tortoreto Lido

Next is Tortoreto Lido, which appears to you after 4 km with its palm-tree-lined promenade and a small jewel: the 2nd-century villa ‘Domus Muracche’, attesting to the town’s foundation in Roman times.

The remains of the structure show that this was composed of the Pane Fructuria, where fine wines and oils were produced, and a residential part facing the sea, where magnificent blue-white mosaics and a terracing wall can still be admired.

Stage 6
Alba Adriatica

A short time to enjoy the spectacle and you already are in Alba Adriatica, with its silver sand, on one of the ‘oldest’ stretches of cycle path in Abruzzo. On one side it overlooks the lush pine forest and offers numerous detours to explore and penetrate into the hinterland, rich in charm and beauty; on the other, you pedal with a view of the Adriatic Sea, with the possibility of stopping at some hidden beaches during the warm season.

In one of these, on a stretch of free beach, the presence of Fratino (a little bird) and Giglio di mare (Sea Lily), a flower characteristic of the Abruzzo coastline, has been located; thanks to the management of WWF Teramo, efforts are being made here to maintain an ecosystem suitable for their survival.

Stage 7
Martinsicuro

Cross another cycle/pedestrian bridge over the Vibrata river and the Villa Rosa area, which, as far as Martinsicuro, features a coastal biotope involving dunes. Pedalling along the seafront, in fact, in a stretch of uncontaminated and protected free beach, you will encounter this area, which represents the most important example of the reconstitution of a dune environment in Abruzzo, capable of preserving over 40 native and spontaneous botanical species typical of the coast.

Here, finally, is the town of the ‘master portolano’ Martin da Seguera, with its 6 km beach and its watchtower.

A short stop to regenerate and then, if you don’t feel tired, going back will be just a pleasure.
