Monastery of the Seven Holy Brothers: through art, a journey over the centuries in Mosciano Sant'Angelo

Nestled in the green hills of Teramo, the Monastery of the Seven Holy Brothers in Mosciano Sant’Angelo will take you on a journey through the centuries rooted in the Middle Ages. Located in a quiet place just outside the town, amidst frescoes, evocative architecture and an atmosphere of deep devotion, it will be an excellent destination to take a break and enjoy a moment to yourself.

Named after the Seven Holy Brothers, sons of Saint Felicita, the monastery was built before 1059 and for centuries has been an important place of spirituality and culture. Initially a Benedictine monastery under the jurisdiction of Montecassino, in 1583 thanks to Cardinal Ottavio Acquaviva it passed to the Friars Minor Observant who made it their home for over four centuries. Although it underwent several modifications and extensions before assuming its current appearance, the convent still retains its original structure, with its cloister, choir, sacristy and tower.

The church attached to the convent, dedicated to Our Lady of the Angels, has a horizontal crowning façade with a round window and two niches containing statues. The interior of the church, with a single nave, is in late Renaissance style and preserves a valuable 17th-century wooden ceiling with depictions of the Madonna and the Holy Seven Brothers.

In addition to its religious value, the Monastery of the Seven Holy Brothers is an important testimony to the history and culture of Abruzzo. The cloister of the convent, with its hexagonal columns and Doric capitals, is a true architectural jewel, while the frescoes depicting the life of Saint Francis in the lunettes are worth appreciating.

A place that is definitely worth a visit if you are spirituality lovers or art and history enthusiast, but also an exceptional space in which to be breathless while attending any of the exclusive cultural events organised there throughout the year.
