The Church of Santa Maria del Suffragio in Nereto

Strolling through the narrow streets of Nereto, you reach the Church of Santa Maria del Suffragio, a small jewel of architectural beauty and artistic uniqueness. The foundation is uncertain, but the establishment of a confraternity is attested in 1676.

The church consists of a single symmetrical body, in a corner position, characterised by a smooth, plastered surface. It is defined by a few pilasters placed on a brick base, interrupted at the portal, where there is a short flight of steps.

The façade ends with a characteristic notched tympanum, inside which you can make out the engraving with the name of the church. The particularly beautiful central portal is inscribed in a moulded stucco frame, surmounted by an architrave decorated with triglyphs and festoons.

The interior is divided into three naves, covered by a lunetted barrel vault and subdivided by rectangular pillars joined by round arches. The nave, including the lunetted barrel vault, is richly decorated with cornices, half pilasters with capitals and paintings with geometric motifs. The two aisles are divided by three round arches of different widths.

The apse of the church, with a semicircular plan, is surmounted by a dome.

The entire perimeter, including that of the apse, divided by vertical partitions, has a notched trabeation.

A curiosity: the Church has two façades, distant but perpendicular to each other, both of which appear to be the main façade.
