Montepagano, the historic village of Roseto degli Abruzzi

Montepagano, a small hamlet of Roseto degli Abruzzi, opens up to your eyes with an enchanting panorama that stretches as far as the sea, bright and clear.

On a hill, the heart of the village fascinates and gently transports you back in time to the Middle Ages, with the help of its most precious jewel: the Castle, a perched bastion rich in works of art. Although small in size, Montepagano in fact has an ancient and important history that winds its way through the streets and small squares.

In the central square you will find the town’s symbolic monument, the Sant’Antimo Bell Tower, which preserves many aspects of the ‘sister towers’ of the Cathedral of Teramo, the Cathedral of Atri, the Cathedral of San Giustino in Chieti and the bell tower of Sant’Agostino in Penne. The tower has a square base, made of river pebbles and bricks, divided into sectors by cornices, with the sides occupied by the holes of the arches, in Romanesque style in the lower part and in Baroque style in the upper part.

The 17th-century Mother Church of the Santissima Annunziata also stands out in the heart of Montepagano. You cannot miss a visit to this precious architecture characterised by a side portal bearing the date 1611. The longitudinal layout is rectangular, with a dome at presbytery level and a bell gable. The interior, simple and austere, contrasts with the artistic riches it preserves: the high altar, characterised by the large carved and sculpted wooden display of saints and angels, with a 19th-century crucifix in the centre, in place of the original painted canvas; the two 17th-century canvases, one depicting the Madonna and Child surrounded by Saints, dated 1660, and another depicting a Madonna and Child, Saint Leonard and Saint Bartholomew, dated 1614. The wooden tabernacles of the altars, the cabinet for holy oils with doors decorated with images of the Annunciation and an interesting wooden sculpture group, date back to the 18th century.

To discover the local popular tradition, we suggest a visit to the Museo Civico della Cultura Materiale (Civic Museum of Material Culture), where you will find tools, working implements and accessories of rural life that tell about the rituals and customs of Roseto’s peasant culture.

And don’t miss the appointment with the excellent DOC wines of this territory: the Mostra dei Vini Tipici di Montepagano (Montepagano Typical Wines Exhibition) is held in August and hosts the major wine producers of the province of Teramo and the entire region.
