Cellino Attanasio
The village of towers and ravines
Cellino Attanasio is an enchanting village between the Piomba and Vomano Valleys, set on a rocky relief. An ideal destination for an authentic experience of culture and history. Going through its narrow streets, flights of steps, pretty squares with benches on which to sit and enjoy a cool, pleasant breeze on summer evenings, admire the surrounding natural view from its overlooks. A panorama marked by the striking clayey slopes called calanchi.

Of pre-Roman origins, the village retains its typical medieval structure, a sign of a glorious past. A direct testimony are the two towers still present, built by the wishes of the Acquaviva family, lords of the village from the 14th century, who established their refuge here due to the presence of numerous strongholds. Above the keep you can see the area now called ‘the fortress’, in memory of the fortified palace that stood tall in defence of the village.

A place of great prestige and beauty, to linger during a walk, is the Church of Santa Maria la Nova, characterised by a portal dating from 1424, the work of the Neapolitan artist Matteo de Caprio, and a bell tower made of stone in the lower part and terracotta in the upper part. Inside the church is a sumptuous Baroque wooden altar, with a 15th-century tabernacle and a column for the Easter candle with a capital dating from 1383.

Not far away is the former Church of Santo Spirito, now home to an Auditorium. The building retains an 18th-century façade with unusual terracotta decorations, also repeated in the entablature above the round-arched portal.

Between history and folklore, very characteristic is the culinary tradition of ‘cingoli cellinesi al sugo di papera (duck sauce)’, also known as ‘cordoni dei frati’ due to the type of pasta, about thirty cm long and three mm thick. This typical preparation dates back to the Middle Ages and is linked to the presence of the Franciscan friars, for whom cingoli were the ‘festive dish’.

Do you love jazz music? Imagine being able to blend it with the architectural and artistic wonders of the area, in unique settings. It is not a dream, but reality. We are talking about the Abbazie Jazz Festival! An event held in summer, along a route rich in nature, traditions and flavours in the Medio Vomano area and in the municipalities of Cellino Attanasio, Notaresco and Morro d’Oro. An unmissable opportunity to experience the territory in a musical atmosphere… and not only.
