It is also known as the Silver Beach: wide, sandy and silvery-coloured beaches, well-equipped lidos, calm and crystal-clear waters, clubs offering lively summer evenings. Valuable opportunities, which have earned Alba Adriatica the Blue Flag, the Green Flag and the Yellow Flag.
The seafront is crossed by a comfortable cycle path, part of the “Bike to coast”, the Adriatic cycle route that connects the entire Abruzzo coast, perfect for relaxing walks and rides, in total safety.
One of the stops not to be missed is the Spiaggia del fratino e del giglio di mare (Beach of the plover and the sea lily): a stretch of free beach, recognised by the WWF as a protected area, designated for the protection of the small wading bird and the spontaneous flower characteristic of the Abruzzo coastline, both endangered.
On your nature walk, take a break in the pine forest, the real lung of the seaside town: you can ride along it on the cycle path along the entire coastline.
The Torrione, Villa Palma and Villa Flaiani, three bastions of Alba Adriatica’s ancient prestige, are also worth a visit. The Torrione is a pyramid-shaped watchtower built by the Spaniards in the 16th century, with its upper base encircled by rectangular battlements and used as a depot for artillery pieces; over the years, it has become part of the town’s urban complex.
Villa Palma, one of the town’s oldest and most beautiful residences, built on a project dating back to 1308, is cylindrical in shape and is covered by a terrace surrounded by wrought-iron railings. Villa Flaiani, a historic villa belonging to the Marquis Flaiani family, now a municipal library, is a testimony to the high nobility that inhabited the area. It boasts a collection of around 9,000 books and hosts recreational, cultural, entertainment and musical activities, with a well-kept park for relaxing in nature.
A perfect synthesis of the land and sea flavours of Abruzzo tradition awaits you at the table, from fresh fish dishes, such as brodetti or spaghetti with clams, to meat dishes, such as chitarra con le pallottine or timballo di scrippelle.
If you are undecided on the best time to visit Alba Adriatica, the perfect occasion is during the unusual Carnevale del Mare (Carnival of the Sea) in August: a unique moment, with floats, masks, colours and dances, where you can experience the most exuberant celebration of the year with the backdrop of the sea and the ideal Adriatic summer temperatures.
